Salish Weave Art Showcased At SBO
As part of incorporating Indigenous learning into the curriculum, Horizons had the exciting opportunity to experience the Salish Weave at the school. In an art unit, students used the included stencils to make their own Salish art. The stencils were fun to use, and the resulting artwork was fantastic. Students watched videos about Salish art and learned about the significance of the shapes of the stencils.
After the unit completion, students walked to the Olympic Oval. One student noticed and recognized that the art on the side of the building was also Salish art. Students were impacted by the unit, and able to apply learnings to the world around them.
As part of increasing district awareness around alternate programs, it is important for Minoru site to showcase our student work and to highlight what we do in our programs. When invited to share our student art with the district, the Salish Weave inspired student work were excellent examples. They are currently displayed in the Board Room at the School Board Office.
