Winter school trip to Capilano
On December 12th, 2023 our students adventured out to the Capilano Suspension Bridge to experience the “Canyon Lights” display. Set against the stunning backdrop of the North Shore mountains, the Canyon Lights event placed our students in a magical winter wonderland that transformed the already breathtaking natural surroundings into a dazzling display of lights and festive decorations. This enchanting experience provided a unique and immersive way to celebrate the holiday season but also offered an opportunity for our students to connect with nature in a new and inspiring way.
The suspension bridge, decorated with colourful lights, provided not only a stunning visual spectacle but also a unique opportunity for our students to conquer their fears and build resilience. The shared experience of traversing the swaying bridge high above the Capilano River created bonds among classmates that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
As our students explored the Treetops Adventure and Cliff-walk, they embraced the thrill of adventure and discovery. These activities not only tested their courage but also offered a hands-on learning experience, blending nature, science, and awe-inspiring beauty.
Once back on solid ground our visited the Kia’palano educational centre dedicated to highlighting the rich culture of the First nations people and their connection to the Capilano Suspension bridge park. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is situated upon the unceded traditional territory of the Skwxwú7mesh Nation and Tseil-Waututh Nation. The students listened, and enjoyed a well-earned hot chocolate, as one of the Capilano Suspension Bridge guides explain the purpose and symbolism of the carved story poles (commonly called totem poles), placed in the park, and their connection to the area.
This excursion aligned with our commitment to providing holistic and experiential learning opportunities for our students and was chance for them to step outside their comfort zones, bond with classmates, and create lasting memories that extend beyond the classroom.
